Here’s how to leap ahead of 90% of designers in 2025

I am slightly late, but Happy 2025 to everyone! Wishing you all a fantastic year ahead. This week I celebrated my birthday and turned 38. I’m getting old. The design world is changing so quickly, and I can’t wait to see what amazing things are coming our way! The tools are evolving, the standards are rising, and AI is rewriting the playbook. But here’s the thing: most designers won’t keep up. They’ll stick to what they know and play it safe. That’s your opportunity to get ahead.
If you’re looking to stand out and make a difference, check out these five strategies to help you make 2025 your best year yet.
1. Think Beyond “Design”
The best designers aren’t just button pushers, they’re problem solvers. They understand strategy, marketing, and business. So, learn to ask better questions: Why does this design matter? How does it move the needle for the client or business?
Action Tip: Pick up books like “Made to Stick” “Start with Why” or “Hooked” to understand how design connects to human behavior and business goals.
2. Master the new tools
AI isn’t the future it’s the present. Tools like ChatGPT, MidJourney, and Figma AI are already reshaping workflows. The designers who embrace these tools will move faster, iterate better, and deliver more value.
Action Tip: Spend 30 minutes a day exploring an AI tool you haven’t used yet. Start small, like using ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas or Figma AI to speed up your designs.

how great it looks for just a minute of work!
3. Become a designer who builds
Coding isn’t just for developers anymore, and it doesn’t have to be intimidating. Knowing some basics like HTML, CSS, WordPress, Webflow, or even using no-code tools like Framer can really help you stand out. With easy-to-use tools like the lovable.dev v0.dev cursor, you can create your own web apps without too much hassle. When you can design and build, you’re not only expanding your skills—you’re becoming a go-to person in any team.
Action Tip: Take on one “build” project this year. Design a site in Figma, then bring it to life in Framer. It’ll boost your confidence and your portfolio.
4. Build your audience
Your portfolio is significant, but your presence online is what attracts opportunities. Share your work, your process, and your learnings. Whether it’s on Twitter, Instagram, or LinkedIn, an audience is your unfair advantage.
Action Tip: Post once a week about your work. It doesn’t have to be perfect just show up and share your journey.
5. Stay Curious
A lot of designers hit a wall because they stopped learning. Don’t be that person! Stay curious, keep up with trends, try new styles, and see what other industries are doing.
Action Tip: Dedicate one hour a week to “exploration.” Read a new blog, study a design trend, or watch a video from a designer you admire.
2025 is your year
Here’s the truth: most designers won’t do this work. They’ll complain about AI, stick to what they know, and fall behind. But not you. You’re here because you’re ready to grow, evolve, and take your skills to the next level. Start small. Pick one or two tips from this list and take action this week.
Remember: the gap between you and the competition isn’t talent it’s consistency and effort. Let’s make 2025 the year you get ahead of 90% of designers.
